Introduction To Spray Paints

The Result: It blasts out uncontrollably, drips instantly, and smells toxic. Because it is oil/alkyd, you often cannot paint over it with acrylics without it cracking or sliding off.
The Fix: You must buy "Artist Grade" spray paint. It is low pressure, matte finish, and chemically compatible with other art supplies.
This is a confusing part of the segment. There are two completely different companies named "Montana," and they hate each other.
1. MTN (Montana Colors) - The Spanish Original
The History: The original graffiti brand from Barcelona.
The Can: MTN 94.
Why it’s legendary: It is named after the year (1994). It is extremely low pressure and matte. It is widely considered the best can for "character" work and fine detail because it is so easy to control.
Scent: It smells like vanilla (seriously), though it is still toxic.
2. Montana Cans - The German Giant
The History: The German competitor (now technically owned by the same parent company as Rust-Oleum, but run independently).
The Cans:
Montana GOLD: The standard for mixed-media artists. It is acrylic-based. This means it plays nice with your tube acrylics and markers. Low pressure.
Montana BLACK: High pressure. Nitro-combination base. Designed for graffiti "bombing" (covering walls fast). It covers wet chrome and dries instantly.
Low Pressure (The "Airbrush" Feel)
Cans: MTN 94, Montana GOLD, Molotow Premium.
Feel: When you press the cap, the paint comes out slowly and gently.
Benefit: You can draw thin lines without the paint dripping. You can fade colors smoothly.
Target: Canvas artists, muralists doing portraits, and beginners.
High Pressure (The "Firehose")
Cans: Montana BLACK, Ironlak, Loop.
Feel: The paint blasts out with force.
Benefit: Covers a huge area instantly. Great for filling in backgrounds or working outside in the wind.
Target: Graffiti writers and large-scale muralists.
In spray paint, the can is just the reservoir. The cap (nozzle) is the brush. All artist cans use a universal "female" valve system, meaning you can swap caps instantly.
1. Skinny Caps (The Detailers)
Common Name: "Level 1" or "Cream Skinny."
Line Width: 1cm to 2cm.
Use: Outlines, signatures, and details.
2. Fat Caps (The Fillers)
Common Name: "New York Fat" or "Pink Dot."
Line Width: 4cm to 10cm.
Use: Filling large areas and creating "flares" (the classic graffiti fading effect).
3. The "Lego" Cap (The Hybrid)
Look: Looks like a yellow Lego brick.
Performance: The perfect middle ground. Sharp lines but decent coverage. If you only buy one cap, buy 50 of these.
Acrylic Base (Montana GOLD, Liquitex Spray)
Pros: Water-soluble (technically) when wet, waterproof when dry. Low odor. Compatible with standard acrylic paint.
Cons: Can clog the cap faster if not cleared.
Synthetic/Nitro Base (Montana BLACK, MTN Hardcore)
Pros: Bites into any surface (plastic, metal, concrete). Dries in seconds.
Cons: Strong solvent smell. If you paint standard acrylics over this too soon, the solvents might eat the acrylic.
Water-Based (MTN Water Based)
The Innovation: Spray paint that is virtually odorless and non-toxic (until dry).
Use: Perfect for indoor studio work where fumes are a problem.
Cons: Expensive and takes longer to dry.
The Best for Canvas / Studio Art:
Try Montana GOLD.
Why: It is true acrylic. You can spray a background, let it dry for 5 minutes, and then paint over it with brush acrylics perfectly. The color range (200+ colors) matches the Pantone system well.
The Best for Murals / Outdoors:
Try MTN 94.
Why: The valve is the smoothest in the game. It practically eliminates drips, making you look like a better artist than you are.
The Safety Warning:
Spray paint releases VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and atomized particulates.
The Rule: A paper dust mask is useless. You need a 3M Half-Face Respirator with Organic Vapor Cartridges (Pink/Yellow). If you can smell the paint, you are damaging your brain cells. Paint outside or with lots of ventilation.
The "Clog" Hack:
When you're done painting, turn the can upside down and spray for 3 seconds until only clear gas comes out. This clears the paint from the tube so it won't dry and clog the can for next time.
